Bodyweight Exercise—Flow Like GI Joe Using Only Bodyweight

by admin on December 8, 2009

The G.I. Joe movie — like any good action flick — contains some admirable scenes of impressive acrobatics. They recall the cool bodyweight exercise moves from CST. That’s the kind of thing that really gets my juices flowing. I love watching good movement, especially enhanced to superhuman proportions through the latest Hollywood gadgetry.

In a recent post — G.I. Joe Fitness — I promised a video of one of my favorite CST Body-Flow movements. It’s a bodyweight exercise that looks cool but that’s really quite simple, and easy to teach. And if you squint your eyes really hard it almost looks like a cool move from G.I. Joe!

The bodyweight exercise is called a Long Arm Roll. I love teaching it to people who have doubts about getting into “weird” looking bodyweight exercises. Using Coach Scott Sonnon’s Body-Flow principles, I help those people surprise themselves every time!

Take a look at the video and you’ll see what I mean.

There’s lots more where that came from. Give it a try and let us know what you think of this cool bodyweight exercise in the comments. If there’s enough interest we’ll keep ‘em comin’.

Thanks for posting this. No matter how many times someone demonstrates that shoulder roll, I get some new detail out of it. And additional thanks for building in a development path going from ground level to a standing execution!!!

Thanks Adam! Great video. I’m going to have today last floorball training before Xmas with kids – and this is something they going to learn today. I think this will be great basic movement to people ;-) . Progression you show is genious.

Seriously Adam, you’re an amazing coach.

Your ability to break down sophisticated moves into organized, sequential bits & chunks is second to none. There’s lots of great coaches out there, some are even as good as you, but no one’s better.

Thanks again for the information. No gives more than you either.

Happy Holidays to you & your family.

I got turned off at an aikido class a few years ago because I hurt my shoulder doing rolls. Maybe the teacher broke it down like this and I don’t remember, but I don’t think so. When I get my carpet out of storage and onto my concrete floor, I’m going to try this!

I used to do that roll but also picking up a rugby(kind of NFL without the protective gear) ball as I rolled. I now understand why my shoulder would hurt after it. Though it might also have had something to do with about 5 opponents tackling me if I got the timing wrong! Great stuff.

Wow that was a fun exercise. It was very easy to get down even though it is a lot different from the way I normally do rolls. Anyway I liked it, and it was a beautiful tutorial. I hope the next exercise will be a little bit more advanced?

Very well broken down. I am a 52 year young woman and within about a dozen attempts I was doing this roll from a squat position. What a thrill the first time I got through it and to my feet!

Thank you for taking the time to post this.

Great post. I just referenced it on my blog The Martial Arts Coach. I was just going to teach the same thing at the Jujusu class I attend. This is the best way to prepare for doing rolls. Thanks for all the great information you provide.
