Is there any particular reason that the cycles start on a moderate intensity day? I ask because you say earlier in the book that a peak peak day occurs on the 28th day of the cycle. According to the matrix, this would be a low intensity day. So if I have a race, it would occur on what is a low intensity day in the cycle? Could you explain this? Thanks, Ann Margaret

It’s really a question of personal preference as to how you would like to start out your 4×7 cycle.  Some people like to begin the ramp up right from a No Intensity day.  Others prefer to jump right in at a Moderate Intensity day.  Both are valid ways to start the program.

Your peak comes on that last High Intensity day.  If you start on a No Intensity day, you’ll finish on the High peak.  If you start on a Moderate day, you’ll finish on the Low Intensity day.  It’s often useful to integrate those final No and Low days directly into the 28-day programing to emphasize the importance of the continued recovery work.

I’ve even had excellent results using an extended period of recovery and then ramping into a final High Intensity day after the 28-day cycle has ended.  I’ve had some of my best Clubbell Trial by Fire times doing this and have programmed some pre-competition peaking like this for clients.

So just to reiterate, starting on either a Moderate or No Intensity day are both fine options.  Hope that helps.
